Professional Learning & Development Day (PLD) – Virtual Reality (VR) Experience & Education

VR Voom runs a Virtual Reality Experience & Education Centre and based on interest from Digital Technology and other teachers, we are putting together our first PLD event, available to educators in New Zealand.

We are looking for teachers who would like to take part in a 'hands-on immersion' into VR and will seek input from participants on specific topics to be covered through the day.  (Dates are potentially flexible – so let us know if you’d like to look at alternate days)

Outline of the Day:

The Centre will be closed to the public and dedicated to the PLD event attendees until 3 PM

  • 8:45 – Arrive at VR Voom Virtual Reality Centre – 393 Khyber Pass Road, Newmarket.  Free espresso coffee and water and snacks available for attendees.

  • 9:00 – Session 1: Introduction to Virtual Reality, VR Voom, and Tour of the VR Centre.

  • 9:45 – Session 2: Experience VR in action – everyone gets to try out a VR experience from all the options available.  There are single-player options available or people can pair up to do multi-player options together.

  • 10:30 – Morning Tea Break.  Free espresso coffee, water and snacks are provided for attendees

  • 10:45 – Session 3: Presentation: Being a student at VR Voom.  We teach students 3D Modelling & Animation (using Blender) and VR Game Design & Programming (using Unity) – you’ll hear from our two-teaching staff to see what kids have created by learning with us, on their own or with schools.  You’ll get an understanding of how quickly kids can be taught how to really use basic coding skills to bring ideas to fruition.

  • 11:30 – Session 4: Experience VR in action – this time focused on games/experiences with an educational aspect to them and like those created by students in our courses.  You’ll have a new understanding of what kids can create and then playtest.

  • 12:00 – Lunchtime!  We will have lunch catered for the group.  We’ll arrange options in advance to cater to any dietary requirements

  • 1:00 – Session 5: Presentation: Realtime 3D creation and VR coding in action.  We’ll go upstairs to our classroom space and walk through some exercises to show you how easy it can be.

  • 1:45 – Session 6: Interactive Discussion.  Other teaching scenarios using 3D/VR.  Teachers can also submit topics they want to discuss throughout the day and we’ll talk about them during this session.

  • 2:30 – Session 7: Game on!  Free reign to try out any other VR experiences you’ve had your eye on...

The Centre will reopen to the public again after 3 PM, you are welcome to remain at the Centre as long as you like.

School Holiday Three-day Programme – Teaching Teachers How to Code for VR

In three days, we’ll take you from little or no experience with creating content for VR to having created your own VR Game using C# Coding Language and the Unity Engine and experienced playing the game you create in a dedicated VR space.

Gain an understanding of basic game design principles and become proficient in the basics of the C# coding language.

You’ll learn by creating a VR Fruit Chopper game step by step, where you’ll then be able to slice up fruit up like a true VR master. It doesn’t have to be fruit! You’ll also learn how to easily find or add your own models to the game to truly personalize your experience.

Have fun learning how to do design and program in VR with other teaching colleagues.  You’ll leave having the confidence to take your students into the journey of bringing their own creations to life in VR too…

Plus, each evening, you’ll get free access to the full range of Virtual Reality Experiences available at VR Voom’s 400m2 location in Newmarket.

You can reach out to Andrew Allerby at VR Voom directly if you have more questions or require more info - email: andrew.a@vrvoom.co.nz || phone: +64 21 228 6664

Or, you can use the below form to book yourself in and we will send an invoice thereafter. Please note, our available spots are limited to 18 attendees per event, thus, we encourage you to book early if you will attend.
